Berylliosis is a rare industrial disease that can be caused by being exposed to beryllium or its compounds. It is basically inflammation of the lungs and is caused when fumes and dust containing the metallic element beryllium is inhaled. Beryllium is used in a number of industries, but it is widely used in the manufacturing and aerospace industry. This element can be found naturally occurring in coal, soil, rock and volcanic dust.
There are many occupations where workers may come into contact with beryllium or its compounds and develop berylliosis. Some of these occupations include atomic engineering, lab technology, dental, ceramic manufacturing, mining, fibre optics, electronics and many more.
When beryllium fumes enter the lungs, they cause the lungs to become inflamed. This makes them rigid and causes a number of symptoms such as weight loss, coughing and shortness of breath. It can make the sufferer extremely ill and also result in death.
Although there is no cure for the condition, the effect of the symptoms can be reduced by undergoing treatment.
