Misdiagnosed Swine Flu Claims

Suffered as a result of swine flu misdiagnosis?  If you have, you may be able to claim financial compensation.

Swine flu which is also called swine influenza, pig flu and hog flu is a respiratory illness which can be caused by any of the different types of the influenza viruses.  In April 2009, swine flu originated in Mexico and since then, it has spread to most parts of the world.   In the past, they only affected people who came into contact with infected animals.  However today, they can spread among humans.  Swine flu is a highly infectious disease and presents symptoms which are quite similar to other illnesses and viruses.  This makes diagnosing swine flu quite difficult.

Common Symptoms

Some of the common symptoms of the disease include:

  • Breathlessness and coughing
  • Sore throat
  • Fatigue
  • Runny nose
  • Diarrhoea
  • Vomiting
  • Lack of apetite
  • Pain in muscles and joints
  • Fever

Medical Negligence

In the UK, a number of call centres have been created throughout the country to assist all those who believe they have developed swine flu.  If a person experiences symptoms of swine flu, he can call and speak to a health advisor over the phone.  The person can describe the symptoms and get a remote diagnosis.  Prescription can also be obtained over the phone.

The procedure was put in place by the National Health Services to make it easier for clinics and doctors to deal with the swine flu pandemic.  Although the procedure was quite successful and a number of patients benefitted from their services, there have been few cases of misdiagnosis.  While it is true that speaking over the telephone can never be a substitute for a proper medical examination, misdiagnosis of a condition like swine flu can have devastating consequences for the patient.

Misdiagnosis of swine flu can occur if a patient has been told that he is suffering from the condition when he is not.  It can also occur if a person is told that he does not have the virus when he does.  Under these circumstances, the patient will either end up taking unnecessary medication or not receiving proper treatment on time.  In some cases misdiagnosis of swine flu can have resulted in serious illness and also death.
